Citycell users get 7 days to shift operator

DHAKA: Citycell users have got seven more days to shift to other operator as the authorities concerned has decided in principle to cancel their license.

State minister Tarana Halim made the announcement at a press briefing after the meeting at secretariat in city Tuesday afternoon (August 16).

According to her, the file regarding the cancellation of Citycell’s license will be sent to the government on Wednesday (August 17) for final decision.

Earlier, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) fixed August 16 for the subscribers to shift from Citycell as the phone operator has Tk 477.51-crore due.

The ministry also threatened to take legal steps against the operator in a notice on July 31 and cancel their license anytime.

While asked about the fate of Citycell employees, Tarana Halim said that it is the office’s internal affairs and she has no right to give any decision regarding the matter.

BTRC chairman Dr Shahjahan Mahmud was present along with high-ups of telecommunication division and BTRC.
