Corrupt businessmen to face action, businesses to remain active: Adviser Asif

Legal action will be taken against corrupt businesspeople but their businesses will remain active, Labour and Employment Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain has said.

Asif Mahmud, also the adviser to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, said that the government will ensure that the businesses associated with such individuals continue to operate, as the livelihoods of many people are tied to these companies.

He emphasised that this government does not show favoritism toward anyone.

Citing an example, the labor adviser said, "The lives of 70,000 employees are linked to Beximco. This means that 70,000 families depend on it. To keep such an institution running, the government is providing support, including facilitating loans for them."

Asif Mahmud made these remarks as the chief guest at the Consumer Rights Conference on Saturday.

The day-long conference was organised by the Conscious Consumers Society (CCS) at the TSC Auditorium of Dhaka University.

The Adviser noted the distinction between an individual’s crime and the business entity itself, saying, “If a person has committed a crime using a business and has laundered money through their connections with the government, we will bring them under trial. However, to keep the business active, the government is providing support.”

He further stated that if young people wish to bring products directly from farmers and producers to consumers, the government will provide all necessary support for this. Additionally, he mentioned that the process of amending the Consumer Rights Act is underway.
