Bashundhara Eye Hospital and Research Institute (BEHRI), an ophthalmic venture of the country’s largest business conglomerate Bashundhara Group, has provided free treatment to around 1,000 destitute in Chapainawabganj.

The patients received treatment at an eye camp organised by Nobojagoron Protibondi Odikar Songstha at Ramchandrapur Hat in Chapainawabgonj on Tuesday.

BEHRI and Vision Care Foundation provided doctors, ophthalmic technologists and other medical logistics delivering treatment to the helpless people in the district.

Debendra Nath Urao,Deputy Director of Local Government Division, inaugurated the camp in the morning.

In the camp, the patients were given medicines and spectacles free of charge.

Apart from providing treatment, the doctors selected many patients for surgeries.

The selected patients will to be taken to Bashundhara Eye Hospital at Bashundhara Residential Area in Dhaka for operation.

According to sources, the patients will be relieved of the cost of operation, transportation, accommodation, food and medicine and lens.

Talking to journalists, Mirjuma Begum, a recipient of treatment, said “Death of my husband forced me to adopt beggary. I have five children, but they have no ability to help me. One of my eyes was operated earlier at the BEHRI. It is turn for the other eye.”

Crying out of joy, she said “I don’t afford food thrice a day, let alone eye treatment. Ophthalmic surgeries have been possible due to magnanimity of the Bashundhara Group. I am grateful to the largest business conglomerate.”

Sources said BEHRI organises free eye camps in various parts of the country throughout the year carrying out surgery on 1,600 people for free so far.
