Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) has detected the highly contagious new Omicron sub-variant of coronavirus, BF.7, in the country. 

Tahmina Shirin, director of Epidemiology, Research and Disease Control, confirmed the matter.

The subvariant was found in four passengers from Kunming, who tested positive for Covid at Dhaka airport on December 26. 

The official data showed a total of 29,440 people in the country have died due to the disease since the start of the pandemic in March of 2020.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the country is 20, 37,125 till now. 

Bangladesh reported its first Coronavirus case on March 8 in 2020 while its first death was on March 18 that year.
