Mannan Bhuiyan passes away, funerals held in capital

DHAKA: Veteran politician and former BNP Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan breathed his last on Tuesday midnight.

Duty doctor at Square Hospital declared him dead at 12:01 on Tuesday night.

The first Janaza for Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, also former LGRD minister, was held Wednesday at 11:15 am at the South Plaza of parliament.

Second Janaza of Mannan Bhuiyan will be held at Baitul Mokahram after Zohr prayer. His body has already been taken to the national mosque premise.

After the funerals in the capital, his body will be taken to his village home in Shibpur upazilla of Narsingdi district.

After a third Janaza at his native place at Shaheed Asad College ground of Shibpur. he will be laid to eternal rest beside his late parents at their family graveyard at Masimpur village.

As the Mannan Bhuiyan`s death news spread after midnight Tuesday, his family members, relatives, well wishers, politicians and people of all sections rushed to the hospital to have a last glimpse of the popular leader.

BNP Vice-chairman and Mayor of  Dhaka Sadek Hossain Khoka and other party leaders rushed to the hospital.

Opposition leader and BNP Chairperson khaleda Zia expressed her deep shock and sorrow at the demise of her party`s former secretary general.

In the morning, the body of Bhuiyan was taken to his Gulshan residence for his last stay there.

Political leaders of different parties visited his home to pay their last respects to the passing leader. .

Among them were, BNP Standing Committee member M K Anwar, Rashed Khan Menon MP,  Hasanul Haq Inu MP and others.

M K Anowar MP told said, “He (Bhuiyan) dedicated his whole life to politics of peoples` welfare.”  
 
JSD president Hasanul Haq Inu MP also paid a glowing  tribute to the late leader, saying that, "Mannan Bhuiyan had played a significant  role at different junctures of national history, including the war of independence and democratic movement."


The condition of Mannan Bhuiyan turned critical at around 11 pm on Monday. His hands and legs became cold, heart was not receiving oxygen while blood pressure dropped, said his personal phisician Dr .... Gani.

He has been undergoing treatment at the Square Hospital since he returned from Singapore.

Earlier, the former local government minister flew to Singapore on May 31 for treatment. He had undergone treatment at Singapore National University Hospital. He was given chemotherapy eight times there, said his family members.
