Flood condition deteriorated in 6 districts

DHAKA: Kurigram, Habiganj, Comilla, Sirajganj, SunamganjFlash flood caused by heavy rainfall marooned a large portion of and Jamalpur districts.

Thousands of people of these areas were caught by sudden flood, local administrations said.

The local authorities have already demanded relief from the government.

Jamalpur: A portion of Pathorshi-Kulkandi flood-control dam collapsed Tuesday following swell of Jamuna river that submerged some 20 villages in Islampur upazila.

Incessant rain and rush of water from across the border for the last few days deteriorated the flood situation in the upazila. Around 10,000 people of the upazila are marooned by the flood water.

Sugarcane, jute and other seasonal crops on a vast area were inundated by the floodwater, said an official of the Water Development Board.

While visiting the flood-hit areas, banglanews24.com.bd correspondent witnessed water rolling into the villages through a leak over 400 meters of the embankment.

The people of the locality are in dire need of food and pure drinking water in the affected areas.  

Sirajganj: Sirajganj sadar, Kajipur, Belkuchi, Chouholi and Shahjadpur upazila are flooded as the water level of Jamuna river increased by 47 cm in the last 24 hours.  

River erosion also takes place beside Jamuna in Chouholi upazila. One third of Khas-Kaoulia bazar has gone into the river in last 10-12 days.

Kurigram: Flow of water in the Bramhaputra river crossed danger level and situation deteriorated. More than 76 villages are newly flooded and around 2 thousand people are marooned.

Officials of Kurigram water development board said that river water has crossed danger level in all the points in last 24 hours.

Sunamganj: The continuous rain flooded many roads of Machbazar and Shaheb Bazar area of the city. Water of Surma has raised 62 cm over the danger level.

Habiganj: Water of Kusiara rushing 42 cm over the danger level. Many areas are flooded and school and colleges have been shut.

Comilla: Heavy rain in the last two days flooded Kandirpar town hall, Victoria College Road, Nimtoli, Stadium Market and Baichagaon. Officials recorded 36 ml rain which marooned hundreds of families.
