Members of the joint forces detained 27 individuals in overnight raids across Chattogram in connection with the killing of young lawyer Saiful Islam Alif during a clash between the followers of former ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, police men, and lawyers yesterday.
Kotwali Police Station's Officer-in-Charge Fazlul Kader said that arrests occurred in Patharghata Mathar Potti, Andarkilla, and Hazari Goli, with operations spanning from Tuesday evening to midnight.
The identities of the detainees are currently being verified, he said.
Saiful Islam was fatally attacked amidst a chaotic three-way confrontation involving law enforcement, protestors, and supporters of Chinmoy Krishna.
The clash ensued after the court had denied Chinmoy Krishna bail in a sedition case.
Joint security forces continued their drives throughout the city late into the night, although no formal case had been registered for Saiful's murder by Tuesday night.
Md. Nazim Uddin, General Secretary of the Chattogram District Bar Association, confirmed that Saiful Islam’s autopsy was completed on Wednesday morning.
The Chattogram District Bar Association has called for a court boycott on Wednesday, demanding swift justice and the arrest of those responsible for the killing.
