Former Chief Justice Ruhul Amin passes away

Former Chief Justice Ruhul Amin passed away early Sunday (November 24) at the age of 83. 

He breathed his last at around 4:30 am while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka.

The Supreme Court confirmed the news of his demise.

Justice Ruhul Amin had been suffering from complications associated with old age for an extended period.

As a mark of respect, all judicial activities of both the Appellate and High Court Divisions of the Supreme Court will remain suspended today. However, the administrative functions of the Supreme Court Registry will continue as usual.

Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed expressed deep sorrow at the passing of Justice Ruhul Amin. He prayed for the departed soul's eternal peace and conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

Born on June 1, 1941, into a noble family in Lakhsmipur, Ruhul Amin earned his bachelor's degree in Political Science from Dhaka University in 1962, followed by an LL.B in 1965.

He began his legal career by enrolling as a lawyer at the then East Pakistan High Court in 1966 and later became a lawyer of the Appellate Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court in 1981.

Justice Ruhul Amin was appointed as a High Court judge on February 18, 1992. He joined the Appellate Division on January 11, 2001.

He served as the 15th Chief Justice of Bangladesh, holding the position from March 1, 2007, to May 31, 2008.
