CEC vows to end voter deprivation, ensure fair elections

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has reaffirmed his commitment to alleviating the suffering of voters and ensuring free, fair, and credible elections.

He said this while speaking at the inauguration of a training program for trainers on voter list updates at the Election Training Institute in Agargaon today (January 5).

The CEC underscored the need for collective cooperation to achieve this goal. He acknowledged that 18 crore people in the country have been deprived of their voting rights and vowed to address this deprivation through reforms and accurate voter registration.

The voter list update program, set to begin on January 20, will involve door-to-door collection of information with the participation of approximately 1.5 lakh trained personnel, he also said.

The CEC highlighted the unfinished reforms of the caretaker government in 1996 and pointed to the recommendations of the Election System Reform Commission as a roadmap for updating the country's electoral rules and regulations.

He also underscored the unique challenges faced by the interim government and Election Commission during this transitional period, noting the heightened expectations from citizens.

The Chief Election Commissioner reiterated the commission’s resolve to provide the nation with transparent and reliable elections.

He called for an accurate voter list as the foundation for a credible electoral process and pledged to restore public trust in voting.

Other election commissioners echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of transparency, ethical practices, and diligence in updating the voter list.

They warned against irregularities, negligence, and financial motives in the process, vowing to treat all voters—whether new, deceased, or existing—with equality.

The commissioners expressed optimism that public trust in elections is gradually improving and stressed that the upcoming efforts would solidify this trust, ensuring a voting system that reflects the true will of the people.
