Judges’ training program in India cancelled

The Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs has canceled the notification regarding the training program of 50 judges in India.

The directive was issued by the Law and Justice Division on Sunday (Jan 5).

Previously, the ministry had approved the participation of these officials in a training session scheduled from February 10 to 20 at the National Judicial Academy in Bhopal and a State Judicial Academy in India. The program was to be funded entirely by the Indian government without any financial involvement from Bangladesh.

The decision to send the judges followed recommendations from the Supreme Court, and officials of various ranks, including assistant judges, senior assistant judges, joint district judges, additional district judges, and district judges, were nominated for the program.

The initiative was part of a 2017 memorandum of understanding signed during then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to India.

The MoU aimed to enhance the capacity and training of Bangladeshi judicial officers in collaboration with India's National Judicial Academy. Since then, several batches of Bangladeshi judges have participated in similar training programs.

No specific reason for the cancellation has been disclosed, but the ministry confirmed that further decisions regarding such programs would be communicated later.
