Railway employees' logical demands to be met: Finance Adviser

Finance Adviser Dr. Salauddin Ahmed has assured that railway employees’ reasonable demands for overtime have been met, while other claims are now under the jurisdiction of the relevant ministry.

He said: “We addressed the reasonable demands of railway employees some time ago. If they remain dissatisfied, that is for them to resolve.”

The adviser gave the assurance on Tuesday in response to questions about budgetary allocations for railways.

Dr. Ahmed emphasized that any valid requests reaching the Ministry of Finance would be considered.

Following a meeting of the Advisors' Council Committee on Government Purchase (ACCGP), he underscored the need to address employment-related concerns on humanitarian grounds.

“Employees often put forward multiple demands, including overtime allowances. We have met feasible requests by granting reasonable benefits. Other claims will now be reviewed by the respective ministry. If any justifiable concerns are brought to us, the Ministry of Finance will take appropriate action, especially in matters related to humanitarian or employment issues,” he said.

When asked about past allocations and any new demands, Dr. Ahmed said that various sectors have similar requests. “For railways, we have resolved the overtime issue. However, if additional benefits such as pension gratuity are sought, similar demands exist across other sectors as well,” he said.

Addressing the ongoing disruptions caused by railway employees’ demands, he deferred the matter to the Railway Adviser, saying that the railway authorities would determine the course of action regarding the strike.

During the meeting, the committee also approved the procurement of essential commodities, including rice, sugar, lentils, and fertilizers, to ensure an uninterrupted supply during Ramadan.

“We are implementing measures to maintain a stable supply chain before, during, and after Ramadan,” Dr. Ahmed said.
