DHAKA:  An old man was killed in a road accident in the city’s Mirpur area on Monday morning, triggering a violent backlash.

Police said a bus knocked down Abdul Baki Mia, 75, a resident of Pallabi, on the road near Mirpur 11 bus stand at about 7:30am. He died on the spot.

“Enraged by the accident, blamed on reckless driving, a mob set ablaze the vehicle, disrupting traffic on the road for several hours amid the melee,” says a report from the spot.

On information, police rushed in and quelled the troubles. The bus driver and his helper, however, managed to flee the public wrath immediate after the mishap.

Police recovered the body and handed over to the family members.

The Pallabi mishap happens to be one of a number of fatal accidents in recent times in the city streets jammed with a mad rush of vehicular traffic and pedestrians.
