DHAKA: A Dhaka court Tuesday again deferred the date for framing charge against detained former State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar in a tax-evasion case, a fallout from the anti-corruption hunt kicked off by the past interim government.

Judge Md. Nasir Uddin Mahmud of the 5th Dhaka Judge’s Court in an order Tuesday fixed September 5 as the next date of hearing following a petition filed by the lawyer of Babar for giving the defence more time to prepare for the legal fight.

Deputy Tax Commissioner of NBR Syed Zakir Hossain on February 14 this year filed the case with the senior special judge’s court against the powerful minister of the past BNP government.

The same day, the court issued an arrest warrant against the former state minister.

According to the case statement, Babar, also director of Master Electronics Limited, evaded payment of about Tk 2.65 crore in income tax on his income of Tk 8,06,80,122 from
1999-2000 to 2008-2009 tax years.

Babar is detained in the August 21 grenade attack case.
