DHAKA: The whereabouts of opposition leader and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia during the BDR mutiny is under probe, said Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, in a latest significant development on the country’s baroque political front.

“The probe findings will be laid bare before the nation,” he added.

While answering a query of journalists at a press conference at Dhanmondi Office of party chief Sheikh Hasina, Hanif said, “It still remains a mystery why Khaleda Zia was outside her house during the three days of BDR mutiny.”

“Why she left her house in a black-glass car?” the ruling-party leader questioned, at a time when the mutiny trial is on steam.

Asked about any initiative to investigate the matter, Hanif hastened to say: “It is already underway. Once finished, the outcome will be made public.”

When he was asked about the persons engaged in the probe, he declined to make comment on the matter under investigation.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other Awami League leaders often raised the issue of whereabouts of Khaleda Zia during the days of mutiny that erupted on the morning of 25th February 2009.

During the mayhem on February 25 and 26, a total of 74 people, including 57 army officers in command of the paramilitary border force under the then BDR director-general Maj Gen Shakil Ahmed, were killed at the BDR headquarters in the city.
