Stand-in JMB chief confesses to making attack on Humayun Azad

BOGRA: The stand-in chief of the banned militant outfit Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), Anwar Alam alias ‘Bhagne’ Shahid, reportedly confessed that he along with his cohorts had attacked eminent writer and Dhaka University teacher Dr Humayun Azad in 2004.

Inspector Abdur Rashid of Bogra DB police told reporters that Shahid gave confessional statement during interrogation while he was produced before Bogras Chief Judicial Magistrates court Monday.

Quoting Shahid, Abdur Rashid said, “When he attacked Humayun Azad, ‘Boma’ Mizan was with him. JMB leaders Sunny and Shamim chopped Azad with lethal weapon ‘Chapati’.”

Meanwhile, ‘Bhagne’ Shahid was remanded for three more days in the case of attempt to murder professor Humayun Azad.

Justice Md Hasanuzzaman of Bogras Chief Judicial Magistrates court issued the order Monday upon a remand plea made by Abdur Rashid.

On February 27, 2004, some miscreants attacked professor Humayun Azad near TSC while he was returning home from Ekushey Book Fair, living him seriously injured.

Azad died on August 11, 2007 during research work in Germany.
