CHITTAGONG: A top-listed terrorist was killed in a shootout between his cohorts and law enforcers at Paindong village in Fatikchhari upazila of the district early Friday.

The deceased was identified as Shawkat alias Sheakat, second-in-command of the outlawed ‘Osman-Bahini’. He was wanted in 14 cases, including businessman Jamaluddin murder.

RAB chief of Chittagong zone Lt Col Sazzad Hossain told banglanews24.com.bd, “Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of RAB and police raided Paindong village at about 3:00am while Shawkat and his associates were holding a secret meeting.

“Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the outlaws opened fire on them. In retaliation, they also fired back. At one stage of fire exchange, Shawkat was severely injured. His accomplices, however, managed to flee the scene.”

The injured was later rushed to Fatikchhari upazila health complex where duty doctors declared him dead at 3:45 am, said RAB sources.

A light gun (LG), a single-barrel gun, 17 bullets and 10 bottles of beer were recovered from the spot, the sources added

Assistant police super of Hathazari circle Babul Aktar told banglanews24.com.bd, “Shawkat became a terrorist after coming in contact with notorious Tipu, the boss of ‘Tipu group’. Later, he joined ‘Osman group’. As Osman died in crossfire during an encounter with RAB last January, Shawkat was reorganizing the group.”
