DHAKA: Newly elected lawmaker from Barisal-5 constituency Jebunnessa Afroz, widow of late Awami League lawmaker Shawkat Hossain Hiron, took oath on Sunday morning.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury administered the oath ceremony at her parliament office.

Deputy Speaker of Jatiya Parliament Fazle Rabbi Mia, Chief Whip ASM Firoz, Whip Shahiduzzaman Sarkar, Whip Iqbalur Rahim, Whip Shahab Uddin, Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operative Ministry affairs committee president Abul Hasanat Abdullah and Member of the Parliament Pankaj Devnath attended in the ceremony.    

The constituency fell vacant after Shawkat died on April 9. The by-polls at the constituency was held on June 15 where Hiron’s widow Jebunnessa emerged as the winner from the ruling AL.
