FENI: The daylong hartal, called by upazila Awami League, is underway in Fulgazi upazila of the district on Thursday amid stray incidents of picketing. 

The ruling party men are observing the general strike protesting the killing of upazila chairman Ekramul Haque Ekram, also upazila Awami League president.

The movements of vehicles remained halted on the most of the upazila roads and the shops were seen closed.

The agitated leaders and activists of Awami League showed their protest by setting fire and putting tree logs on the roads.

Earlier on Tuesday morning, Fulgazi Upazila Chairman Ekramul Haque was shot and burnt to death in a miscreants’ attack in the district town.

Three others, who were on the vehicle, were also critically burnt in the incident that took place in front of Bilash Cinema hall in Academy area at around 11:00am.

A case was filed by the victim’s elder brother Rezaul Haque Jasim against 35 people, including BNP-backed Fulgazi upazila chairman candidate Mahtabuddin Chowdhury Minar, with Feni Model thana on Wednesday in connection with the killing of Ekram.

Earlier on Wednesday, the law enforcers detained 23 people and also seized a private car and two motorbikes suspecting those were used during the arson attack that left the chairman dead.
