The price of green chilli hit an all-time high as it was sold at Tk 800 to Tk 1000 per kg in the kitchen markets across the country, including Dhaka, on Saturday (July 1).

In the Jhenaidah Sadar and Shailkupa sub-districts, traders sold green chili peppers at Tk 1000 per kilogram. People with low and middle-income people struggled to buy green chilli due to its exorbitant price.

The price of green chilies has suddenly increased. A few days ago, traders sold green chillies at Tk 300 to Tk 320 per kilogram. Now it has skyrocketed to Tk 1000 per kg.

According to the traders of various markets in the district, the price increased due to lower production of green chillies compared to demand.

Carpenter Russel from the district town told Banglanews: "I earn Tk 500 by working all day. It is difficult for me to buy other groceries if I buy green chilies at a rate of Tk 800 per kilogram."

Green chilli vendor Dulal Hossen from Shailkupa sub-district said, "The price of green chillies has gone up because the flowers from the plants are falling off due to the rain. I came to the market with five kilograms of green chilies. I sold them wholesale at a rate of Tk 900 per kilogram."

Farmer Mohsin Ali said, "A few days ago, the flowers fell off the chilli plants due to the sunlight. As a result, the price of chillies has increased. After bringing eight kilograms of green chillies to the Shailkupa market, I sold them at Tk 1000 per kilogram."

Wholesale trader Mukaddas Hossain said, "Now, the price in the chilli market has risen a lot. We bought chilies at Tk 800 wholesale."

According to the Jhenaidah Agricultural Extension Department, in the current season, chilli has been cultivated on 1,724 hectares of land in six sub-districts of the district.

Jhenaidah Agricultural Extension Department deputy director Azgor Ali said, "The rain destroyed most chilli plants on the lands. As the production was less than the demand, its price increased."
