Separate policies to be made for local, int'l markets: BAJUS President

Separate policies will be formulated for domestic and international markets in the jewelry industry, said Sayem Sobhan Anvir, Managing Director (MD) of Bashundhara Group, and President of the Bangladesh Jewelers' Association (BAJUS).

BAJUS President Sayem Sobhan Anvir said this while presiding over a seminar organised as part of the BAJUS Fair on Friday (Feb 9).

Prime Minister’s Private Industry and Investment Adviser Salman F Rahman attended the event as the chief guest.

Bangladesh Jeweller's Association (BAJUS) organised the seminar on challenges and opportunities in financing the jewellery industry on the second day of the three-day mega exposition at International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB) in the capital.

BAJUS President also said, "I completely agree with what Salman F Rahman said about the need for separate policies for domestic and international markets. As domestic and international gold markets are not the same, different policies are needed here. We will consider this matter."

He further said, "The way neighboring countries have progressed in formulating policies for the jewelry industry, we will also propose policies in that direction so that we do not lag behind. Since we have given the name 'Sonar Bangladesh' (Golden Bangladesh), if it is not patronized well, the name will remain just a name and will not serve any purpose."

Sayem Sobhan Anvir said, "We are hopeful after hearing the remarks of Prime Minister’s Private Industry and Investment Adviser Salman F Rahman that this sector will develop. We have discussed the development of the jewelry industry with many people many times before. But this time we are hopeful because Salman F Rahman uncle has assured me that the necessary policy reforms are needed for the development of this sector, such as tax-VAT related matters, will be resolved."

Dr. Birupaksha Pal, former Chief Economist of Bangladesh Bank, presented the keynote at the seminar.

Besides, Bengal Commercial Bank chairman and former Vice President of FBCCI Jashim Uddin, Chairman of Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) Asif Ibrahim, BAJUS Vice President Samit Ghosh, Global Islamic Bank chairman Nizam Chowdhury, Eminent banker Mohammed Shams-ul-Islam, Managing Director and CEO of Eastern Bank Ali Reza Iftekhar, FBCCI director Ikbal Hossain Chowdhury, and Jagannath University (JnU) Prof Dr Tabassum Zaman (Economics Dept) also spoke in the seminar.
