DHAKA: Finance Minister AMA Muhith set a budget of Tk 250,000 crore for the fiscal year 2014-15 in the country.

The amount of the budget was less than Tk 92,000-93,000 crore that was in five years back.

The finance minister came up with the disclosure at NEC conference room-2 in a pre-budget meeting with Parliamentary Standing Committee on Sunday.

He also said budget is an estimation which can be more or less in the time of finalization. Both the growth rate of revenue budget and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will be increased with the same speed, he added.

The growth rate of GDP has increased three percent in last year and will be more in future, the finance minister commented.

Myhith said the development of human resources will be the main focus of the next budget.

He added: “We were more concerned in power sector last time as it was in a critical situation but this time we are emphasizing human resource development.”

The ruling Awami League lawmaker said, “Moreover, the quality of primary level education has improved but the secondary level is still not up to the satisfactory level, so we need to work on that.”

Co-chair of the parliamentary special committee for constitutional amendment, and also chief of the parliamentary standing committee on law, justice and parliamentary affairs ministry Suranjit Sengupta, the chairman of a parliamentary watchdog on water resources Ramesh Chandra Sen and former primary and mass education minister and chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on education ministry Afsarul Amin attended the meeting.

Chairman of the parliamentary standing committee of labour and employment ministry and former state minister Begum Munnujan Sufian, Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman and National Board of Revenue (NBR) chairman M Ghulam Hussain were among others present at the meeting.
