Govt to send 24,886 jute workers into early retirement

DHAKA: The government has decided to send 24,886 employees of state-owned jute mills into early retirement through ‘golden handshake’ scheme.

Textiles and Jute minister Golam Dastagir Gazi came up with the announcement in an online briefing on Sunday (June 28),

"We can't run jute mills with losses," he said, adding the government has thought that the workers should take this sector forward with a golden handshake.

The Golden Handshake is the process of removing a permanent worker from his job by paying his dues according to the wage commission, he added.

Workers of the public jute mills will be given a 'golden handshake' and the decision has already got the approval from the government's highest level, the minister said.

Golam Dastagir Gazi also said there would be no state-owned jute mills in the country rather those would be run under the public-private partnership (PPP).
