DHAKA: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Wednesday (November 22) upheld a High Court verdict that declares illegal the Islamic University (IU)-Kushtia syndicate’s decision to cancel the F-unit admission test for 2016-17 session.

An Appellate bench led by Acting Chief Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah announced the verdict. It also dismissed the appeal filed by IU.   

Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajol moved for IU while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam moved for the state.

Earlier, the High Court gave an order which was later challenged by the IU.

On January 16, 100 students were admitted to IU’s departments of Math and Statistics after passing in the admission test taken on December 7, 2016.

Later, the varsity syndicate repealed the entry test, on the ground of question paper leak charges.  

As many as 88 students including one Farhana Akter Liza filed a writ petition with the High Court, challenging the decision taken by the syndicate.

On March 13, the court issued a rule upon the plea and stayed the decision of IU.

Meanwhile, the varsity authority again taken admission test under F-unit (i.e. Math, Statistics) on March 16, said Barrister Ruhul.

“The HC declared the rule absolute. Therefore, admission of the 100 students passing in the January 16 test is upheld”, he said.  

However, on Wednesday, Ruhul said that the verdict will be applicable for all the 100 students, despite of the writ filed by 88. From which session they will starts study at IU would be known later, once the detail verdict comes out.
