Ex-VAT officer sued for waiving interest of Tk 152cr 

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has sued former commissioner of large taxpayers' unit (LTU) of value-added tax (VAT) of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) Waheeda Rahman Choudhury on charge of waiving interest of Tk 152 crore to four mobile operator companies by misusing power.

The case was filed at the ACC's integrated district office in Dhaka-1 on Tuesday (June 11). 

ACC's assistant director Md Shah Alam Sheikh filed the case.

Customes commissioner Waheeda Rahman Choudhury went on retirement as the LTU Commissioner. She is now on Post Retirement Leave (PRL).

ACC Secretary Khorsheda Yasmin has confirmed the matter.

She said Wahida Rahman misused power and provided illegal facilities to four mobile operators. This has caused financial loss to the government.

The former commissioner has waived unpaid interest of Tk 152 crore 89 thousand 390 of Grameenphone Limited, Banglalink, Robi and Airtel in a single executive decision, She said.

According to case statement, between March 2020 and November 2022, Wahida Rahman Chowdhury waived unpaid interest of four mobile operators of amount Tk 152 crore 89 lakh 390 in 16 documents in a single executive decision violating law.
