Battery rickshaw drivers' protests spark severe traffic jams in Dhaka

Battery-powered rickshaw drivers have blocked roads in Mohakhali, Mohammadpur, Mirpur, Gabtali, and Demra, protesting the ban on battery-powered auto-rickshaws on the capital's main roads.

The demonstrations have caused severe traffic congestion in these areas on Thursday morning.

The High Court on Tuesday directed government authorities to take necessary measures to stop the operation of battery-run rickshaws and auto-rickshaws on Dhaka streets within three days.

In response, over a hundred rickshaw drivers gathered on Mohakhali road around 9:30 am, causing heavy traffic congestion on both sides.

In a post on the Facebook page of the Traffic Mirpur Division, traffic is being disrupted in Mazar Road area due to the movement of rickshaw pullers. The traffic department is working to maintain normal traffic flow, it added.

Besides, another group of drivers staged a protest on Agargaon road, voicing the same demands.

Meanwhile, commuters shared photos and warnings on social media, urging others to avoid the affected routes.

Traffic police warned that disruptions could continue unless the protests are resolved promptly.
