Justice Shahed Nooruddin resigns

High Court Division Justice Shahed Nooruddin has resigned while under investigation by the Supreme Judicial Council over his previous activities.

The Supreme Court disclosed the information on Thursday (Jan 30), confirming that Justice Shahed Nooruddin submitted his resignation letter to the President through the Chief Justice.

Earlier, the Supreme Judicial Council launched an inquiry into the conduct of Justice Nooruddin and other judges.

Following student protests demanding the resignation of "biased, corrupt, and fascist-aligned" judges, Supreme Court Registrar General Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan announced that 12 High Court judges would be withdrawn from judicial duties starting Sunday (October 20). However, he did not disclose their names. The Supreme Court's cause list for that day later confirmed their absence.

The 12 judges are Justice Ataur Rahman Khan, Justice Naima Haider, Justice Sheikh Hasan Arif, Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar, Justice Ashish Ranjan Das, Justice Khizir Hayat, Justice SM Moniruzzaman, Justice Khondker Diliruzzaman, Justice Shahed Nooruddin, Justice Md Akhtaruzzaman, Justice Md Aminul Islam, and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolon.

On August 10, students from various institutions gathered at the High Court in response to a call from the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. That same day, then-Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan and five Appellate Division judges resigned following student demands.
