SHARIATPUR: Transport workers Sunday went on indefinite strike in the district following a clash with the students of Shariatpur Govt. College.

A triangular clash Saturday following a brawl over bus fare left some 60 people wounded, including six policemen.

The district Sarak Paribahan Sramik Union called the transport strike, demanding that the students involved in the clash be punished.

"The strike will continue until the trial of the students who attacked general workers, including General Secretary of the union Elim Pahar,” said the union in calling the strike.

Tensions mounted in the district town again as the students of the college and transport workers declared demonstrations separately Sunday.

Sources said additional police forces were deployed at various flashpoints of the town, including the college campus, to avert further flare-ups.

Joint General Secretary Jalal Mazi of the union said the students attacked the transport workers capriciously.

No case was filed from either side, said Rabiul Alam, officer-in-charge of Palong Thana.
