PM vows for economic freedom on NatÔÇÖl Mourning Day at Tungipara

TUNGIPARA: As the nation Sunday mourned for Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the country’s founding father sacrificed his life for the sake of economic emancipation of the have-nots.

“We are now working to attain economic solvency of the people by ensuring country’s development and prosperity,” she said after paying homage to Bangabandhu Mujib through commemorative service at his eternal resting place at Tungipara.

She placed wreath at his tomb marking the National Mourning Day on the 35th anniversary of his demise at 10:12am.

The premier also distributed sewing machines and certificates among destitute women so they could earn their own bread.

Asking government officials to perform their respective duties properly, the premier said, “It is possible to eradicate poverty from the country if all officials of the administration do their jobs properly from their respective position.”

Later, the Awami League chief also attended a Munajat on the premises of the graves of her father, grandfather and grandmother.

Sheikh Hasina was accompanied by her younger sister Sheikh Rehana, and kinsmen Abul Hasnat Abdullah, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Barrister Fazle Noor Tapas and Sheikh Helal.

LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam, Planning Minister A K Khandaker, Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain, Commerce Minister Faruk Khan and Health Minister Dr A F M Ruhal Haque also present.  

The PM left Gopalganj for Dhaka at about 12:45 pm.

Special security measures were heightened for the mourning-day programmes in different parts of Gopalganj sadar, Tungipara, Kotalipara and Moksudpur upazilas.
