DHAKA: A suspected terrorist was killed in a gunfight between Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members and his cohorts in the city’s Tejgaon industrial area early Friday.

The deceased was identified as Shahidul Islam or Chanchal alias ‘Bhagne Shahid’, nephew of detained ‘top terror’ Sweden Aslam.

RAB Company Commander Major Arshad said that, on suspicion, a patrol team of RAB, led by SI Shafique, asked the driver of a private car to halt at around 1:15 am. But the driver drove on at a higher speed to escape and entered Tejgaon industrial area, he said.

“As the patrols chased and headed off the car, the passengers opened fire on the elite force. The RAB members also fired back in self-defence, leaving Chanchal injured. He died on way to hospital,” Major Arshad said.

RAB sources claimed that there are some murder cases, including Montu De Casta murder case, pending against Chanchal with city’s different Thanas.

SI Abdus Salam of Tejgaon Industrial Thana told banglanews24.com.bd that RAB handed over the body to Tejgaon Police Station.

The body was sent into Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, he added.
