Bangladesh has 41,09,755 cases pending in all courts, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq said on Sunday.
He revealed the information in parliament during a discussion of the proposal to cut allocation to the Law and Justice Division in the budget of the FY2024-25.
Anisul said there is no denying the issue of a huge case backlog, but the number of judges is insufficient to handle the pending cases.
In 2009, there were only 800 judges, and at present, there are 2,000 judges, he said.
“We have already submitted a proposal to increase the number of courts and hope that 158 courts will be added very soon,” the minister said.
