2 BGP men, 31 Rohingyas take shelter on St Martin's Island

Two armed members of the Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) and 31 Rohingyas have taken refuge in St Martin's Island of Bangladesh amid the ongoing conflict between the ruling junta and the armed rebel group in the neighbouring country.

A trawler carrying the Myanmar nationals anchored at the island in the early hours of Friday.

Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Adnan Chowdhury said, “I have also heard the news. Now they are under the custody of the Border Guard of Bangladesh. The BGB, however, has not informed me yet about the matter.”

BGB Subedar Sanwar Hossain confirming the matter said he was heading to the spot and would be able to reveal the details later on.

Mujibur Rahman, chairman of St Martin's union parishad, said he came to know that the trawler carrying passengers from Maungdaw in Myanmar landed on the island amid inclement weather.

Members of the BGB took them under their custody at a resort on the northern side of the island, he added.
