Bangladesh to host Rohingya crisis conference in 2025

Bangladesh will hold an international conference on the Rohingya crisis in Dhaka next year, between September and October, to discuss the ongoing humanitarian and political challenges faced by the Rohingya refugees.

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam made the announcement today (December 10), during a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital.

The conference aims to bring together representatives from countries and organizations deeply involved or concerned about the Rohingya issue.

Expected participants include the United Nations, the European Union, China, India, the United States, and other relevant stakeholders.

"The modalities of the conference will be finalized by April next year, and we are hopeful that a wide range of global actors will engage in discussions aimed at finding a lasting solution to the crisis," Alam said.

He also emphasized that the Bangladeshi government is closely monitoring the situation in Myanmar, from where over a million Rohingya refugees fled to Bangladesh in 2017 due to a military crackdown.

The idea for the conference was first proposed by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September 2023.
