16 RAB members were arrested for their involvement in various crimes after August 5, said RAB Director General (DG) Additional IGP AKM Shahidur Rahman.
He disclosed the matter at a press conference organized at the Karwan Bazar RAB Media Center in the capital on Thursday (December 12) afternoon.
Shahidur Rahman said: "The law and order situation deteriorated after August 5. Later, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members started working to bring the law and order situation under control. While doing this work, 16 RAB members got involved in various crimes. They were accused of extortion, drugs and robbery. Action is being taken against these members for these crimes."
The RAB DG also said that since its inception, 58 RAB officers and 4,246 members have been brought under punishment for various crimes.
He further said, "We had some challenges after August 5. RAB is working to control the law and order situation including rebellion among Ansar members, instability in the garment sector, and strike in the Rural Electricity Association. So far, 20,000 illegal weapons have been recovered along with 14,500 accused."
RAB would not be involved in disappearances and murders, the RAB DG also assured.
