Ban on Jamaat may be lifted tomorrow

The interim government is expected to withdraw the ban on Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir tomorrow.

Advocate Mohammad Shishir Manir, the lawyer for Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, said that a notification in this regard was issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Advocate Shishir disclosed this information at a press conference at the Supreme Court on Monday (26 August).

He said, “I have spoken with the Ministry of Home Affairs. They have informed me that the entire procedure has been completed. Today is a public holiday, I am hopeful that the ban will be withdrawn tomorrow (Tuesday).”

On 1 August, the Awami League government banned Jamaat-e-Islami, its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir and all of its front organisations as political parties and entities under the Anti-Terrorism Act-2009.

On 5 August, Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled the country in the face of a mass uprising against her AL government.
