A Dhaka court today (Jan 1) placed former Food Minister Advocate Qamrul Islam on a total of four days of remand in connection with two extortion cases filed with the Kamrangirchar Police Station.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Belal Hossain issued the remand order after police produced Qamrul before the court and sought a 10-day remand for each case. The defense argued for his bail, but after hearing both sides, the court granted a two-day remand for each case.
Qamrul was arrested on November 18, 2024, from a house in the capital's Uttara-12 area.
One of the cases was filed by Sagir Ahmed Sujon, who accused Qamrul and 13 others of demanding Tk 1 crore in extortion. Despite paying Tk 20 lakh, the accused allegedly vandalized and looted Sujon's house on September 24, 2023. Sujon filed the case on September 4, 2024.
The second case was filed by Ali Ahmed against Qamrul and 10 others, alleging they demanded Tk 20 lakh in 2020. When Ali refused, the accused reportedly threatened him with a pistol and assaulted him. This case was filed on September 7, 2024.
