BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has claimed that $280 billion was siphoned off from Bangladesh over the last 15 years.
He made the remark on Friday (Jan 3) while speaking as the chief guest at the golden jubilee and achievers' recognition program of the Economics Department of Dinajpur Government College.
Fakhrul alleged that the current generation has not been able to exercise their voting rights during the last three terms.
"What kind of democracy is this? What kind of politics is this where citizens have not been able to cast their votes even once in five years?" he questioned.
He said, "We talk about democracy but do not practice it properly. As a result, democratic institutions have not been built. Instead, political parties are locked in opposition against one another."
He mentioned that the past government facilitated the laundering of $16 billion annually, totaling $280 billion over the last 15 years.
