Bushra Afreen has been appointed as the first ‘Chief Heat Officer’ (CHO) of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
DNCC made the announcement yesterday (May 3) at the launching ceremony of an international collaboration between DNCC and Adrienne Arsht-Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Centre at Dhaka University.
Bushra Afrin, the only daughter of the DNCC mayor Md Atiqul Islam.
As the Chief Heat Officer, her role is to lead efforts to make the city safer in the face of extreme heat and to unify the city's planning and responses to extreme heat, particularly for the most vulnerable neighborhoods and people.
Bushra Afreen said as a permanent resident of Dhaka, it is very urgent to address extreme heat in Dhaka where temperature is rising at an alarming rate and informal communities, migrants and women and girls are disproportionately affected.
Meanwhile, DNCC mayor Md Atiqul Islam announced that DNCC will plant two lakh trees in the next two years in a bid to reduce the temperature of the city.
