DU VC convenes emergency meeting with principals of 7 colleges

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan has called an emergency meeting with the principals of the seven affiliated colleges.

The meeting is scheduled for 12:30 pm on Monday (January 27), according to a press release issued on Sunday (January 26) night by Mohammad Rafiqul Islam Khan, Acting Director of DU’s Public Relations Department.

The notice stated that the meeting would take place in the conference room adjacent to the Vice-Chancellor’s office, where various issues concerning the interests of students from the seven affiliated government colleges will be discussed.

The decision came hours after a violent clash erupted between students of DU and those from seven affiliated colleges, including Dhaka College, continuing until midnight on Sunday (Jan 26).

Dhaka College students attempted to enter the DU campus in a protest march around 10 pm, intending to surround the office of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Mamun Ahmed through the Liberation and Democracy Arch. As news of the march spread, DU students from various dormitories mobilized to resist them.

Both groups engaged in chase and counter-chase for hours, throwing bricks and stones at each other in the Nilkhet and New Market areas.

To restore order, police intervened with 12 rounds of sound grenades and positioned water cannons and tear gas between the two sides.

As the situation escalated, two platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were deployed for additional security.

The unrest stemmed from a protest earlier on Sunday afternoon when students from the seven colleges presented a five-point demand to Prof. Mamun Ahmed. Dissatisfied with his response, tensions mounted, ultimately leading to the late-night clashes.
